"Don't grind yourself so hard either—try making yourself a hobby," said my mom, the one taking computer classes.

[A hobby that thrills me just to think about]

  • For me, the highest value is “spending time with family”
  • But here, “family” includes my wife and daughter, my parents, my in-laws — and also “me.”
  • Q: How much time do I actually spend on “myself” on a normal day?
  • A: Every morning, 1–1.5h in my study + the early-morning gym, and occasionally out with my wife and kid on weekends (intermittent = unplannable). That’s it.

“Don’t kill yourself grinding away—try making yourself a hobby.”

—Mom, currently taking computer classes—

  • And honestly, she might have a point. Even those morning hours go to business worries and development, and the workouts are for the sake of health.
  • So then, what would a hobby actually look like, for me?

1. What is a hobby?

  • Has nothing to do with the outcome

  • Has nothing to do with productivity or efficiency = something where you happily waste time and money in exchange for “fun” = fun is priority #1

  • Something you want to look up and learn more about every single day

  • Something where time slips by unnoticed, and you keep wanting just a bit more

  • It’s pretty much like the “soccer” I used to play as a kid.

2. Hobby candidates that come to mind right now?

  • A small drink in the evening: Lately hooked on the Camus (brandy, cognac) I gifted my father-in-law; aside from the cost, I’d love to enjoy it every day; I’m curious about it; but it’s only a brief, momentary pleasure ○

  • Quant trading: it depends on results, productivity, and efficiency, but it’s also fun = but, it’s my own business = fun is only priority #2 = out X

  • Fencing: distance, cost, time—the overall expense looks far too high. = out X

  • Gaming: flexible hours, actually fun, seems like a perfectly decent option. ○

  • Soccer class: the time and cost are real, but just imagining it sounds fun ○

So what? Drinks → gaming → soccer, in that order, starting this week. Let’s go.
