My wife was in the hospital with a kidney infection, her fever holding steady at 40 degrees,
and at home our baby’s temperature climbed to 39.
I nursed her through the night, gave her the fever medicine, and while we were playing together—
she was fighting the illness, and it was almost as if she were telling her dad she was okay,
saying, “What should we play now?” and “The medicine tastes good.” It was so brave and so heartbreaking all at once.
After I put her to sleep, I had a dream
in which my baby appeared, but she had a face on both the front and back of her head and needed surgery,
and there I was, frantic to get her that surgery no matter what, ready to quit my job on the spot if that’s what it took.
This wasn’t about company leave or vacation days,
so the moment I woke before dawn I called in, apologized, and said I couldn’t come.
My family is everything to me.
